SOURCES
- REFERENCEClinical guideline
WHO guidelines on physical activity and sedentary behaviour
World Health Organization · 2020
Establishes aerobic exercise generally — not zone 2 specifically.
- REFERENCEPosition stand
American College of Sports Medicine position stand: quantity and quality of exercise for developing and maintaining cardiorespiratory, musculoskeletal, and neuromotor fitness
Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise (Garber et al.) · 2011
Supports moderate-intensity aerobic volume; agnostic on zone branding.
- REFERENCEPreclinicalPending document
Assessment of metabolic flexibility by means of measuring blood lactate, fat, and carbohydrate oxidation responses to exercise in professional endurance athletes and less-fit individuals
Sports Medicine (San Millan and Brooks) · 2018
Mechanistic and observational basis for the zone 2 emphasis.

REGULATORY STATUS
WHO THIS IS FOR
- Lifters whose conditioning is the visible weak link
- People who abandoned cardio because every session was a max effort
WHAT PEOPLE GET WRONG
- Zone 2 is the only cardio worth doing.
- The strongest datasets support total aerobic activity across intensities. Zone 2 is a sustainable way to accumulate volume, not a magic frequency.
- You need a lactate meter to start.
- Conversational pace — able to talk, not able to sing — lands close enough for almost everyone outside professional sport.
QUESTIONS
- How do I know I am in zone 2?
- The talk test: full sentences possible, singing not. If you need lab-grade precision later, earn it with months of consistency first.
- Is walking zone 2?
- For deconditioned people, brisk walking can be. As fitness improves, the same internal effort requires a faster pace — which is the adaptation working.
