WHAT IT IS

Hydrolyzed collagen — the structural protein of skin, tendon, and bone, broken into small absorbable peptides and sold as a powder. Marketed hard for skin, hair, nails, and joints.

HOW IT WORKS

Digested collagen peptides appear in the bloodstream and may signal fibroblasts — the cells that build skin and connective tissue — to synthesize more collagen and related matrix components. Plausible, partially demonstrated, not yet settled.

WHERE THE EVIDENCE STANDS

A handful of small randomized trials show measurable improvements in skin elasticity and hydration, and reviews pooling them agree — but the trials are small and mostly industry-funded. Promising is the honest word. Proven is not.

REGULATORY STATUS

OTC dietary supplementSold as a dietary supplement. No approved claims; skin-benefit marketing lives in the gap between structure/function language and what the trials actually measured.

WHO THIS IS FOR

  • People optimizing skin who already have the fundamentals — sun protection, sleep, retinoid — in place
  • Anyone deciding whether the powder earns a slot or the money goes to sunscreen

WHAT PEOPLE GET WRONG

Collagen you eat becomes collagen in your skin.
It is digested into peptides and amino acids first. Any effect runs through signaling and building blocks, not direct delivery.
It replaces a retinoid or sunscreen.
The effect sizes in collagen trials are small next to what photoprotection and retinoids show. It is a possible addition, never a substitute.

WHAT WE CLAIM

  • Early clinical trials report improvements in skin elasticity and hydration.

    Clinical evidence

  • Hydrolyzed collagen peptide content stated per serving.

Structure and use, not an effect claim

QUESTIONS

Does collagen work for skin?
The small trials that exist say possibly yes, modestly. STAXXX grades it EMERGING because that is what a few small industry-funded trials earn — no more, no less.
Vegan collagen — is that real?
There is no plant collagen. Products labeled that way are precursor blends (amino acids, vitamin C) with even less direct evidence than collagen itself.
